UUP Sick Leave Exchange Program
United University Professions (UUP) recently negotiated a Sick Leave Exchange Program in its 1999–2003 agreement with the state. Each year, full-time employees represented by UUP who have sick-leave balances of 15 days or more at the time of election may exchange sick leave for a credit toward their health insurance premiums.

Phase I will be implemented on April 1. Participating employees will earn 2.25 fewer days of sick leave in exchange for a credit of up to $225 toward their biweekly health insurance premiums for the remainder of the calendar year. The reduction in health insurance rates will be effective with the April 12 paycheck.

Because the credit cannot exceed the employee's share for health insurance premiums, those who would pay less than $225 in premiums from April 1 to December 31 may find that this program would not be to their advantage.

The program applies to sick-leave credits that the employee will earn during the period of his or her obligation. Sick leave credits already accrued cannot be exchanged under this program.

The election period for participation in Phase I of the program is February 1 to February 29. The election form must be submitted to the Human Resource Management Office, Cleveland Hall 410, by February 29.

A program description and election forms were mailed to all full-time UUP employees. If you are eligible and have not received an election form, or if you have questions, please contact human resource management at ext. 4821.

STARS Training
STARS (Student Transcript and Registration System) training workshops will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, February 14 and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 17 in CyberQuad, E. H. EPIC Workshops
Weigel Health Center will conduct EPIC (Every Person Influences Children) workshops from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Wednesdays, February 16 to March 29, at the health center.

The EPIC program is a model, proven to reduce risk factors associated with neglect and abuse by teaching parents how to set limits, cope with frustration, and develop positive parent-child relationships. The workshops provide insight into methods of increasing involvement in children's education, strengthening parenting skills, and learning to make effective decisions. By participating in EPIC, adults have an opportunity to learn to raise children to become responsible adults with good decision-making skills and increased self-concepts.

These free parenting workshops are for adults responsible for infants, toddlers, and young children. For information or to register, contact the Weigel Health Center at ext. 6711.

Student Appreciation Week
The Intercollegiate Athletics Department will recognize students who are fans of Buffalo State athletics during Student Appreciation Week, February 6–12. The department will sponsor several home contests throughout the week, and prizes will be awarded to students in attendance at our weekend events. The week will culminate with the "Battle of the Dorms" on Friday, February 11 and a "Half-Court Shootout" during halftime of the men's basketball game on Saturday, February 12.

Friday
The "Battle of the Dorms" will be judged solely on attendance at Friday's events. Buffalo State faces Plattsburgh in a men's hockey match at 7:00 p.m. in the Ice Arena, and the men's and women's basketball teams compete against Plattsburgh at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively. Dorm students sign in with their SUNYCards in the Sports Arena lobby. The residence hall with the greatest attendance wins a pizza party sponsored by the athletics department.

Saturday
The women's basketball team starts the day with a game against Potsdam at 2:00 p.m. The Lady Bengals hockey team is in action against Chatham at 3:00 p.m. At 4:00 p.m., the men's basketball team takes the court to face Potsdam. The "Half-Court Shootout" takes place at halftime.

Every Buffalo State student will receive a raffle ticket (must show student ID) for a drawing late in the first half of the men's basketball game. The winner will take a half-court shot at intermission and, if the student makes the shot, he or she wins a free dorm room for the fall 2000 semester, courtesy of the Residence Life Office.

Saturday's final event is at 7:00 p.m., when the men's hockey team battles Potsdam in the season's final home contest.

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend any or all of the sporting events and enjoy the festivities.

Diversity Video, Panel Discussion Postponed
The video and panel discussion, Shattering the Silences: The Case for Minority Faculty, has been postponed due to the unfortunate accident involving several of our students. The program will be rescheduled later this semester.

The 50-minute video has been described as one of the most important films to be produced about higher education or race in this decade. Minority scholars demonstrate how a more diverse faculty enriches traditional scholarship and contributes to a more inclusive campus.
