State-Mandated Class
"Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse/Maltreatment," a state-mandated, two-hour class, will be offered by the Center for Development of Human Services for educators, health care professionals, and school administrators from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25 in Rockwell Hall 202. For preregistration, applicable fee, additional information, and a schedule of future offerings, please call 876-7600.

From the Vice President for Finance and Management

Web Publishing Standards
Use of the Web at Buffalo State has grown tremendously in the past five years. The campus must ensure that information conveyed through this dynamic, exciting medium is both accurate and accessible; moreover, it must uniformly reflect the mission and strategic goals of the college in 2000 and beyond to our multiple audiences: current and prospective students, faculty and staff, alumni, donors, and the publics we serve.

New standards have been developed for college Web publications; they are available at www.buffalostate.edu/offices/collegerelations/toolbox. The standards were developed by the College Relations Office and Web 2000, an 18-member advisory subcommittee established by the college's Technology Council. Web 2000 comprises two students and representatives from the three faculties, E. H. Butler Library, the Career Development Center, the College Senate, Computing Services, enrollment management, the FAST Center, and instructional resources.

The guidelines were created to meet several objectives:

The college will need time to adopt these standards; immediate compliance is not expected. Resources for support and training will be available to help Web creators phase the standards into existing sites so that Buffalo State ultimately complies with New York State-mandated ADA requirements.

Individual Development Award Funding Considerations
The campus professional development committee received an unprecedented number of requests for NYS/UUP Joint Labor-Management Committee Individual Development Awards. With limited funding to support professional development activities, the committee awarded funds using the following considerations:

Campus committee members are Deborah Jones, Anthony Nowakowski, and Wanda Slawinska representing UUP; and Dolores Battle, Dorcas Colvin, and Mel Netzhammer representing management.

Extended Health Benefits for Graduating Dependents
The New York State Division of Employee Benefits has announced a health insurance program change for enrollees represented by CSEA and UUP and those designated as Management/Confidential.

Effective May 1, 2000, an unmarried dependent student between ages 19 and 25 who graduates from an accredited secondary or preparatory school, college, or other educational institution may continue health insurance coverage for up to three additional months following the completion of coursework.

The extension is not automatic. A completed application must be submitted to the Human Resource Management Office before the dependent completes the coursework necessary for graduation. Contact human resource management at ext. 4821 for forms and additional information.

Keeping Health Insurance Records Current
It is important to keep New York State employee health insurance records current. Please notify the Human Resource Management Office if:

Certain deadlines apply. Some changes may result in higher or lower health insurance premiums. Covered dependents who lose eligibility (e.g., a former spouse upon divorce or a child who turns 19 and is not a full-time student) may pay the full cost to maintain coverage through federal COBRA provisions, but must do so within 60 days of the date coverage ends.

If any of the above changes occurs, promptly notify human resource management to prevent unnecessary arrearages or overpayments, late-enrollment waiting periods, loss of coverage for ineligible family members, or misdirected mail. To report changes or to obtain further information, contact the Human Resource Management Office, Cleveland Hall 410, ext. 4821.

From the Vice President for Student Affairs

Interactive, Web-Based Career Fairs Extended
Due to the overwhelming success of and demand for the virtual job fairs, two recently held fairs are being extended. The SUNY Virtual Job Fair, www.sunyjobfairs.org, and the NYJOBS Virtual Job Fair 2000, www.collegecentral.com/nyjobs, will remain open and active until Tuesday, May 30. The Career Development Center can assist students and alumni with their participation.

To date, 307 Buffalo State students and alumni have visited these sites and have been able to choose from among 561 employers with an uncounted number of position vacancies.

Virtual job fairs use the Internet to introduce students to employers from around the state. Full-time, part-time, internship, and summer positions are available. All positions remain posted for the duration of the events. Candidates can access information about employers and their hiring needs, including application information. Applications are completed by mail, fax, or e-mail or online. Buffalo State students and alumni from all majors are invited to participate.
