Twenty-Five Year Employees Luncheon
I am pleased to invite the college community to a luncheon at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, May 4 honoring faculty and staff who are in their 25th year of service at Buffalo State. This annual event serves to honor our colleagues at a milestone in their professional careers and to thank them for their dedication to Buffalo State. The eight employees crossing the 25-year mark this year are:

John S. Frederick, student life; Warren L. Gleckel, exceptional education; Virginia E. Grabiner, sociology; Michael Johnson, foreign language; Samuel Lunetta, University Police; Sam Maislin, criminal justice; Jennifer D. McMahon, Computing Services; and Janet C. Pulka, psychology.

The cost of the luncheon is $20 per person, and includes a choice of entrée (boneless breast of chicken, stuffed with roasted red peppers, fresh spinach, and feta cheese, wrapped in filo dough and served with a champagne terragon sauce; black angus sirloin steak with spinach-mushroom stuffing, laced with a bordelaise sauce; or portabello mushroom ravioli with fresh, grilled vegetables, served in a sundried tomato-basil sauce) and nonalcoholic beverages.

Those wishing to attend the luncheon should deliver a check, payable to the Buffalo State College Foundation, to Melissa Beck, Cleveland Hall 517, by Friday, April 28. Please indicate choice of entrée.

Critique and Evaluation Period
Critique and Evaluation Period (CEP) for spring 2000 is Monday, May 8; Tuesday, May 9; Wednesday, May 10; and Thursday, May 11. A study day will be held Friday, May 5.

CEP provides students and faculty with an extended period of uninterrupted time to conduct appropriate end-of-course activities. CEP is designed for classes that meet more than once a week. Classes (evening or day) that meet once a week have sufficient time for final evaluation; therefore, they follow their regular schedules and hold exams during CEP.

The following regulations govern CEP:

  1. A study day will be held the weekday immediately before the start of CEP. Evening classes that meet once a week will not have a study day.

  2. All instructors are expected to meet their classes at the scheduled time during CEP and to choose an appropriate activity that reflects the academic goals of the course and the intent of CEP, e.g., an exam, a review, critique of papers, course summation, individual presentations or demonstrations, etc.

  3. Instructors will not schedule final exams prior to CEP. Instructors may not change the dates or times of their final class periods during CEP. In case of emergencies, confer with the appropriate dean and notify the vice president for academic affairs.

  4. CEPs will be scheduled for one-hour-and-50-minute periods. Instrutors are not to increase or decrease the scheduled CEP time.

  5. In case of emergencies that would close the school, scheduled CEPs will be rescheduled as appropriate.

  6. Faculty members must post office hours during which they will be available to meet with students during CEP.

From the Chair of the College Senate

College Senate Meeting
The next College Senate meeting will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 5 in E. H. Butler Library 210.

Actions of the Senate
At its April 14 meeting, the College Senate voted to pass and forward to the president the following resolutions:

BE IT RESOLVED THAT

  1. The Buffalo State College Senate commemorates former President Paul G. Bulger's leadership of the college.

As president from 1959 to 1967, Paul Bulger promoted the academic and physical expansion of the college. His vision led to pioneering innovations in the application of technology to the curriculum, as symbolized by the building that bears his name. President Bulger's dedication to the arts was well known, and that dedication found expression in the founding of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center. His commitment to the intellectual and community life of faculty and students was manifested in his plans for a new library, new student union, and the construction and refurbishment of numerous classroom facilities.

The energy and enthusiasm he generated for institutional excellence and expansion was further complemented by his compelling compassion for members of our community who needed his personal support. His devotion to our students is legendary and was manifested through his personal friendships, social interactions, and alumni outreach. At heart, Paul G. Bulger was a people's president who set the college on its present course. He provided a standard for his successors and for the community to achieve and sustain, namely, a Buffalo State College providing educational opportunity and excellence at home and abroad.

  2. The faculty and staff listing in the undergraduate catalog revert to the most recent format of faculty and staff in a unified alphabetical listing, with names spelled correctly, and with equal and identical information for all employees. This format is consistent with the spirit of this College Senate, which embraces all constituents on this campus.
