EAP Workshop: Advance Directives and Living Wills
The Employee Assistance Program at Buffalo State is pleased to sponsor "Advance Care Planning: A Gift," a free workshop on living wills and health-care proxies, from noon to 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 20, in Bacon Hall 217.

Who will speak for you if you can't speak for yourself? Advance care planning enables you to receive medical care that respects your personal values, spiritual beliefs, and cultural background if you are unable to speak for yourself. It is also one of the greatest gifts you can give to your loved ones if they must speak for you.

This one-hour presentation offers a framework for clarifying these issues and choosing someone to carry out your wishes using materials developed by the Community-Wide End of Life/Palliative Care Initiative. Presenter Mary A. Durlak, College Relations, completed the Community Conversations on Compassionate Care facilitator training offered by Dr. Patricia Bomba, vice president and medical director of geriatrics for Excellus Inc.

This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Please contact Nancy Paschke, EAP chair, ext. 4237, to reserve a seat. Please feel free to bring your lunch.

Weigel Health Center Reaccreditation
Buffalo State College's Weigel Health Center has been reaccredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC/Accreditation Association) for three more years.

Status as an accredited organization means the student health center has passed a series of rigorous and nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care set by the Accreditation Association. More than 3,000 ambulatory health-care organizations across the United States are accredited by AAAHC.

"Accreditation underscores our long-standing commitment to providing the highest possible levels of quality care to the community we serve," said Angeline Price, the health center's associate director. "We are pleased and proud to have our efforts recognized with this accreditation."

Ambulatory health-care organizations seeking accreditation by AAAHC undergo an extensive on-site, peer-based survey of their facilities and services. Not all ambulatory health-care organizations seek accreditation; not all undergoing the on-site survey are granted accreditation.

Among the types of ambulatory health-care organizations that can seek AAAHC accreditation are ambulatory and office-based surgery centers, single and multi-specialty group practices, college health centers, dental group practices, community health centers, occupational health centers, and managed care organizations. Buffalo State's Weigel Health Center is the only Western New York college health center that has received this accreditation.

From the Chair of the College Senate

Senate Vacancies: Call for Nominations March 12–March 30
At-large and University Faculty Senate positions will become vacant on August 27. A call for nominations and information about candidates' statements can be found online. The call for nominations will begin on Monday, March 12, and continue through Friday, March 30. Elections will begin on Monday, April 9, and continue through Friday, April 20.

Faculty members, faculty librarians, and professional and support staff whose total service in the College Senate would not exceed six consecutive years by the end of this term (September 2007–August 2010) are eligible to run for office. Nominees are asked to provide a short statement about their interest in serving as an at-large or University Faculty senator, and post their statements on the Senate electronic voting site by sending the materials to Judy Janus, Senate secretary. Details are provided on the Senate Web site.

Individuals running for a senator position in another election may not also run for an at-large senator or University Faculty senator position while the other election is being conducted. If the other election concludes during the period when nominations for at-large or University Faculty senator are still being accepted, eligible individuals may self-nominate for either position.

If you are interested in being a candidate, please contact Judy Janus, ext. 5139. We look forward to your participation in the vital process of campus governance.
