College Writing Program
Several changes are now in place and more will be coming for the College Writing Program. A new director, Susan Leist, professor of English, was appointed at the start of this academic year, and four full-time lecturers were hired in January 2006: John McKinnis, Michele Ninacs, Wendy Scott, and Irene Sipos. A search is under way for a fifth full-time lecturer to join the program in the fall.
Offices for the director and new faculty members were established in University College in the South Wing 130 suite.
The traditional name of the program was affirmed, and the decision was made to prefix College Writing Program courses—formerly known as ENG 099, ENG 101, and ENG 102—as CWP 099, CWP 101, and CWP 102, effective with the fall 2007 semester.
Beginning the third week of the spring 2007 semester, two Writing Help Desks will be established in E. H. Butler Library, operating from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and staffed by CWP adjunct lecturers and students from ENG 309W: Teaching and Evaluating Writing classes. Tutoring services for the CWP courses will continue to be offered by the Academic Skills Center and the EOP Academic Resource Center, both in South Wing, and the English Department Writing Center in Ketchum Hall. To send a student to tutoring, please use the referral form at www.buffalostate.edu/academicsupport/x491.xml. Click on "Instructor Referral Form."
A new process for placing first-year students in CWP courses based on SAT scores was piloted this January. The placement process to be used for fall 2007 will be on the College Writing Program Web site when the results of the pilot are studied.
This semester, Leist is offering training and consultation to interested professors teaching Writing across the Curriculum courses for Intellectual Foundations. In fall 2007, the College Writing Program will offer several sections of discipline-specific and department-specific CWP 102 sections. Schools and departments can request such sections for subsequent semesters by calling Leist at ext. 3797.
Plans are being studied as well for creating two writing classrooms, one a computer lab, and additional tutoring and adjunct lecturer offices in Butler Library during 2007.
