From the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Seminar: Community-Based
Environmental Chemical Analysis

Joseph A. Gardella Jr., professor of chemistry and associate dean for external affairs at the University at Buffalo, will present "Not Love Canal: A Community-Based Environmental Chemical Analysis" at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, October 23 in Science Building 272. Gardella's talk will include public service learning and case studies for teaching instrumental analysis and research in community-based environmental studies. Call the Chemistry Department, ext. 5204, for more information.

This event is presented by the Buffalo State College Chemistry and Biology departments and sponsored by the Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program, the Auxiliary Services Grant Allocation Committee, and the Vice President for Student Affairs Office.

Graduate Studies Open House
The Graduate Studies and Research Office will celebrate its grand opening from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, October 27 in Cleveland Hall 204. All faculty and staff are invited to stop by to see the new office space and learn more about graduate studies at Buffalo State. Refreshments will be served.

Art Conservation Open House
The Art Conservation Department's faculty and students cordially invite the college community to the department's annual open house from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 24 on the second floor of Rockwell Hall. The event provides a rare opportunity to observe the materials, techniques, and equipment used to examine, restore, and preserve works of art and artifacts of various cultures. Objects in different stages of conservation treatment will be on display. Faculty and students will explain and demonstrate aspects of conservation principles and practices, and will answer questions about the department's graduate program and the work of conservators.
