SABRE Update

SABRE Training Sessions
Many thanks to the nearly 1,400 students, staff, and faculty members who responded to the SABRE online survey or participated in the SABRE feedback sessions. Results are being incorporated into SABRE plans. Increased support to students, faculty, and staff will be developed and publicized, as will guidelines for electronic waitlists, which will be finalized and shared with the campus before the start of next semester.

Respondents indicated a need for more information about using the SABRE system. Introductory and refresher training sessions will be held in CyberQuad, E. H. Butler Library 318; dates and times are listed below. Registration is not required, but those who register will receive a reminder e-mail the day before their session. Register via e-mail at SABREsupport@buffalostate.edu. Session information, including the agenda, is posted at www.buffalostate.edu/sabre/facstaff/resources/index.asp?sub=update.

From the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Art Conservation Open House
The Art Conservation Department's faculty and students cordially invite the college community to the department's annual open house from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 24 on the second floor of Rockwell Hall. The event provides a rare opportunity to observe the materials, techniques, and equipment used to examine, restore, and preserve works of art and artifacts of various cultures. Objects in different stages of conservation treatment will be on display. Faculty and students will explain and demonstrate aspects of conservation principles and practices and will answer questions about the department's graduate program and the work of conservators.

Provost Incentive Grants
The Academic Affairs Office announces the availability of Provost Incentive Grants of up to $1,000 each to support research, scholarship, and creativity at Buffalo State College. The 2003–2004 grants will provide tenured and tenure-track faculty with funding to assist with travel, research, exhibitions, and other scholarly activities.

Applications are available at the E. H. Butler Library Reference Desk. Applications for spring 2004 must be received in the Academic Affairs Office, Cleveland Hall 519, by Friday, November 14. Support funds are provided by the Continuing Education Office and the Faculty-Staff Development Fund of the Buffalo State College Foundation.

From the Vice President for Finance and Management

Drug-Free Workplace Policy
In compliance with the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, employees of Buffalo State College should be aware of and must adhere to the policy stated below:

    The unlawful use, possession, manufacture, dispensation, or distribution of controlled substances in all Buffalo State College work locations is prohibited. The term "controlled substance" means a controlled substance in Schedules I through V of Section 202 of the Controlled Substances Act (21USC812).

    Employees who unlawfully manufacture, dispense, distribute, possess, or use a controlled substance will be subject to disciplinary procedures consistent with applicable laws, rules, regulations, and collective-bargaining agreements.

    Employees must notify the Human Resource Management Office of any criminal conviction for a drug-statute violation occurring in the workplace or at a work site no later than five working days after such conviction. An employee so convicted will be required to satisfactorily participate in a state-approved drug-abuse assistance or rehabilitation program as a condition of continuing employment.

The Employee Assistance Program is available on campus for employees who wish to seek assistance in dealing with drug- or alcohol-related problems as well as a variety of other concerns. Please call one of the EAP coordinators listed below for information:

Call for Nominations: Distinguished Alumnus Award
The Buffalo State College Alumni Association seeks nominations for the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus Award, presented annually at commencement. Established in 1965, this prestigious award is given to graduates who meet the following criteria:

  1. Significant professional achievement or recognition in his or her field.
  2. Dedication to community service and volunteerism.
  3. Demonstrated ongoing support for and loyalty to the college.

Recipients also must be able to attend the commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 15, 2004.

The Buffalo State SEFA/United Way Campaign continues through Friday, October 17. I am pleased to thank everyone who has contributed so far, and I urge others who want to participate to do so. Please turn in your completed pledge forms to your office or department SEFA volunteers.

Memorial Service for Anne Rogovin
Members of the campus community are invited to attend a memorial service celebrating the life and work of Buffalo State alumnus Anne Rogovin, recipient of a 2003 Distinguished Alumnus Award, who passed away on July 7. The service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18 in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall, followed by a reception in the Burchfield-Penney Art Center. Call Hal D. Payne, vice president for student affairs, at ext. 4704 with questions regarding this event.

Candy and Cash at the Union Bash
The Union Bash returns to the Campbell Student Union at 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 24. Experience the Haunted Union or try your luck for prizes at Casino Night in the lobby. After being spooked, come relax with "Spoken Word" at the Undergrounds Café, "mocktails" in the Fireside Lounge, or bingo in the Assembly Hall.

This free campuswide event includes programming for the entire family. Children's activities begin at 6:00 p.m., with programs tailored for students, staff, and faculty throughout the evening. This event is sponsored, in part, by the Student Life Office, the Student Union Board (SUB), the Residence Hall Association (RHA), Residence Life, Weigel Health Center, Minority Student Services, United Students Government (USG), University Police, and the Undergrounds. Manners Matter: A Professional Etiquette and Networking Workshop
Buffalo State will hold its second annual workshop on professional etiquette, Manners Matter, from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, November 6. The workshop will provide students with expert advice on common etiquette questions such as, Which piece of silverware should I use for which course? and What should I order and what do I say when I am being interviewed over dinner?

A "mocktail" party with appetizers, held in the Campbell Student Union Fireside Lounge, will teach students how to mingle with employers and make positive first impressions. A seven-course gourmet dinner, guaranteed to provide plenty of eating challenges, will follow in the Assembly Hall. Instruction will be provided throughout the event, and prominent community and campus leaders will offer advice on a variety of etiquette-related topics during dinner.

Tickets are $10 per person, nonrefundable, and must be purchased from Campus Dining Services, Campbell Student Union 223, by Friday, October 31. Meal cards may be used. Space is limited; last year's event was sold out. For more information, contact the Career Development Center, Cleveland Hall 306, ext. 5811. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to attend this excellent learning opportunity.

The workshop is presented by the Career Development Center, the Hospitality and Tourism Department, the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, Auxiliary Services, and Buffalo State Dining Services and is funded by an Auxiliary Services Grant.

Wellness Wednesdays Series
Spirituality: Make the Connection

Spirituality, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, refers to "attitudes, beliefs, and practices that animate people's lives" and provide a dimension of human experience having to do with identity, purpose, and meaning. Explore how college life can compete with our beliefs, and how to identify spiritual or religious values that reinforce our opinions, affirm our experiences, and define our options.

Volleyball Record
Buffalo State senior tri-captain Denise Jedynak (Hamburg/Frontier) set a Buffalo State volleyball record last week with a new school best for digs in a season and matched the career mark. Jedynak became the first Bengal to record 500 digs in a season with 504, surpassing the old record of 478 set by Melissa Sullivan in 1994. Jedynak also equaled the career record of 1,059 digs set by Amber Kehr from 1996 through 1999.

Women's Soccer Record
Women's soccer player Gina Monaco became the school's all-time leading scorer on Saturday with three goals in the college's 7-2 win over Potsdam. The Buffalo State sophomore has already tallied 35 career goals, surpassing the previous record of 34 by Valerie Krell (1983–86) and Lori Galipeau (1994–97). Monaco set a Buffalo State record last year—a single-season best 20 goals and 45 points. She is currently second on the Bengals' list of all-time scorers with 76 career points, behind Krell's record of 85.
