Woods-Beals Endowed Chair Candidate Presentations
The provost and the search committee for the Woods-Beals Endowed Chair in Urban and
Rural Education invite the campus community to a series of presentations by the
candidates for the position.
Buffalo State College has a distinguished history of leadership in teacher education, and
the Woods-Beals Endowed Chair in Urban and Rural Education, the college's first
endowed chair, will enhance that distinction. With support from alumna Eleanore Woods
Beals, '50, and Vaughn Beals, former chair of Harley-Davidson Inc., the endowed chair
will allow the college to highlight its ongoing commitment to improving public
education. The position will begin summer 2004.
The following candidates will deliver their presentations at 9:00 a.m. in E. H. Butler

P. Rudolph Mattai, Ph.D.
Wednesday, March 10
P. Rudolph Mattai, professor of educational foundations at Buffalo State, is
president-elect of the Association of Teacher Educators. He is an internationally known educational
scholar and consultant.
Paul Theobald, Ph.D.
Thursday, March 11
Paul Theobald, a nationally known speaker, is dean of the School of Education and
Counseling at Wayne State College, in Wayne, Nebraska. His scholarship explores the
area of rural education.

Stephen Caldas, Ph.D.
Friday, March 12
Stephen Caldas is the SLEMCO/LEQSF Regents Endowed Professor of Education at the
University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His scholarship explores the history and practice of
school desegregation.
Carol Westby, Ph.D.
Wednesday, March 17
Carol Westby is a nationally known speaker and international consultant in the field of
speech pathology. Her scholarship is concerned with multicultural populations and
communication.
Samuel Stringfield, Ph.D.
Friday, March 19
Samuel Stringfield is a professor of education and co-director of the Center for Social
Organization of Schools at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland.
International in scope, his research and scholarship are concerned with public school
renewal and reform.

Community Service Faculty Fellowships
Become a Buffalo State College Community Service Faculty Fellow this summer and receive a $1,500 stipend!
Academic Affairs and Student Affairs are
pleased to announce a new faculty fellowship opportunity made available
by a Corporation for National and Community Service Learn and Serve
grant. This exciting opportunity with the new Volunteer and Service
Learning Center will provide assistance in integrating community
service into a current or new course. Bring the community into your
classroom and provide your students with experiential opportunities to
enhance their learning. Training will be provided in May and June by
experienced Buffalo State colleagues and national service learning
experts.

State-Mandated Class: Identification and Reporting
of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
The Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, a
two-and-a-half-hour course required for teacher certification and other professional licenses, is again being
offered by the Center for Development of Human Services.
Mandated reporter training includes information regarding the physical and behavioral
indicators of child abuse and maltreatment. The course provides an overview of Child
Protective Services, how to report, when a report should be made, legal protection, and
consequences of failure to make a report. Upon completion of training, participants
receive a certificate of completion and instructions for its submission for professional
license, permit, or teacher certification.

The Career Development Center will sponsor
the 22nd annual Summer/Part-Time-Job Fair from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Tuesday, March 9 in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall.
This is a great opportunity for students to meet with employers and discuss
summer and part-time employment opportunities. Employers representing summer
camps, business, industry, and community service organizations will be accepting

All-SUNYAC Basketball Honors
Three Buffalo State students were included in the State University of New York
Athletic Conference's all-conference basketball teams, announced last week at the
SUNYAC Basketball Championship Banquet in Utica.
Monique Hanks (Liverpool/Liverpool) represented the women's team as a First
Team All-SUNYAC selection. The senior guard ranked in the top 10 in the
SUNYAC in five statistical categories, including leading the conference with 3.69
steals per game. She also ranked third in rebounding, averaging 8.1, and seventh in
scoring, with 13.3 points per game. Hanks finished her career as the second Bengal
ever to score 1,000 points and grab 500 career rebounds as she finished with 1,100
and 641 respectively.
Seniors Perry Davis (Buffalo/Seneca) and Joshua Becker (Hamburg/Frontier)
represented the men's team. Davis was a Second Team selection, ranking in the
top 10 of the SUNYAC in six statistical categories, including ninth in conference
scoring with 15.3 points per game, and third in rebounding, averaging 9.3. Davis
also finished third in steals with 2.67 per game.
Becker earned honorable mention status, finishing fifth in conference scoring,
averaging 15.9 points per game. He finished his career 10th on Buffalo State's
all-time scoring list with 1,202 points, despite playing just three seasons.
