From the President

Twenty-five Year Employees Luncheon
I am pleased to invite the college community to a luncheon honoring faculty and staff who are in their 25th year of service at Buffalo State College. The luncheon will be held at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 in the Saturn Club, 977 Delaware Avenue. Reservations will be accepted through Thursday, April 25.

This annual event serves to honor our colleagues at a milestone in their professional careers and to thank them for their dedication to Buffalo State. The 21 employees crossing the 25-year mark this year are:

Community Service Day
The sixth annual Buffalo State College/Buffalo Community Service Day will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27. Volunteers will help build two new parks in Buffalo, refurbish existing parks, and work in Delaware Park. Lunch will be served at the college. Transportation will be provided.

Sr. Helen Prejean
I am pleased to announce that Sr. Helen Prejean's visit to campus has been rescheduled for Tuesday, November 19. Prejean, noted author of Dead Man Walking, will meet with students during the day and give a public presentation in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall in the evening. Further details will be provided as they become available.

Requisition Deadlines
Requisitions for supplies, materials, services, and equipment from fiscal year 2001–02 funds must be received in the Purchasing Office by close of business the following dates:

$20,000 or more (noncontract) Monday, April 29
$20,000 or more (contract) Monday, June 3
less than $20,000 Friday, June 14

Purchase requisitions for computer equipment and equipment replacement requirements, as well as purchases through Boise Cascade for office supplies and copier paper, also must adhere to these deadlines. American Express (AMEX) cardholders should curtail card use after June 14. Please plan accordingly.

Important note: It is the responsibility of departments to ensure that all requisitions for fiscal year 2001–02 are received in the Purchasing Office by the above deadlines. Late requisitions will not be processed. Requests received through campus mail after the deadlines will be returned.

Call for Nominations: Delegates to Annual Meeting
of NYS Teachers' Retirement System

Pursuant to the provisions of Education Law Section 505, Buffalo State seeks nominations for one delegate and one alternate to the annual meeting of the New York State Teachers' Retirement System in November. Delegates serve a one-year term beginning August 1.

Employees of Buffalo State College who are members of the NYS Teachers' Retirement System are eligible for nomination. Nomination forms, available in the Human Resource Management Office, Cleveland Hall 410, must be returned by Friday, April 26.

The election will be held Tuesday, April 30. If no nominations are received, or if the number of nominees equals the number of delegates (one delegate and one alternate), no election will be held.

Hockey Humanitarian Award
Buffalo State's Rocky Reeves received the 2002 Hockey Humanitarian Award on April 5 at the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota. The annual award recognizes college hockey's finest citizen. Reeves, the Bengals captain, became the first Division III men's player to earn this distinction. He was honored for his tireless volunteer work that has included Take Back the Night, Project FLIGHT, AID BUFFALO, a holiday rummage sale for the homeless, a clothing drive for the United Way, and serving Thanksgiving dinner at the Concerned Ecumenical Ministry Soup Kitchen.

The Safe Zone Project
The Safe Zone Project is a new initiative sponsored by the Counseling Center to increase awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues; reduce homophobia and heterosexism; and make the campus a safer, freer environment for all its members, regardless of sexual orientation.

A panel of LGBT students, staff, and faculty will discuss their experiences from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 15 in the Campbell Student Union Assembly Hall. Contact Amy L. Reynolds, staff psychologist, at ext. 4436 for more information.

Senate Elections
Senate elections for four at-large Senate seats and one SUNY University Senate seat will be conducted Monday, April 15–Thursday, April 25 using both paper and electronic ballots.

Those who wish to vote electronically must have an NT account (the account used for Outlook). The election process can be accessed through the Senate Web site at www.buffalostate.edu/orgs/senate using Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher. Call the HELP Desk at ext. 4357 for NT account or Internet Explorer assistance.

Paper ballots will be tallied after electronic ballots; thus, if a member should accidentally vote twice, only the electronic vote will be recorded.
