Supplemental Discretionary Faculty Salary Increases
We are pleased to announce that a joint study of faculty salaries by the college and UUP will result in a supplemental discretionary salary increase for eligible faculty members. Whereas we have been fortunate in recent years to be able to hire new full-time faculty at more competitive salaries, these salaries have, at times, approached or surpassed salaries of those hired in years past. Therefore, in spring 1999, then Interim Provost Dennis Ponton convened a labor-management working group to examine faculty salaries at the college in comparison to state and national data, and in relationship to starting salaries for recently appointed faculty.
Based on the research and on similar studies at other institutions, the group developed a model to benchmark faculty salaries based on rank and time in rank. Salaries that fell below the standards were monitored and adjusted, when possible, during the two most recent rounds of faculty discretionary adjustments. The college now has designated a one-time allocation of resources to address remaining base-salary issues. These funds, reserved from the operating budget, will be distributed on a discretionary basis to individuals whose base salaries fell below the adopted standards.
The labor-management group comprised Dorcas Colvin, associate vice president for human resource management; Susan Davis, associate professor of economics and finance and UUP chapter president; Rosalyn Lindner, senior associate to the provost for teaching, learning, and assessment; Stan Medinac, associate vice president for facilities planning and institutional studies; Karen O'Quin, interim associate dean of natural and social sciences; and Ponton.
Librarians' salaries are being reviewed separately, and the outcome will be announced in a few weeks. Professional-staff salaries will be examined during the coming year.

Liberty Partnerships Program Interim Director Appointed
Diane Townsend has resigned as director of the Liberty Partnerships Program to join her husband, Nelson Townsend, in his retirement. Townsend joined Buffalo State in September 1989 as a staff associate in the Research Foundation under a grant from the New York State Department of Education. Most recently, Townsend served as site coordinator for the four precollegiate programs housed in the Buckham Campus School E-Wing: Liberty Partnerships, Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP), Talent Search, and Upward Bound. We are grateful to Townsend for her years of service to Buffalo State and her devotion to increasing educational opportunities for local schoolchildren.
Michelle Butts has been appointed interim director of the Liberty Partnerships Program. She previously served as director of STEP and as an academic counselor in both the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry (C-STEP) and Talent Search Programs. She also has worked as a mental health resource specialist with Head Start and as an adjunct faculty member of the Graduate School of Social Work at the University at Buffalo. A certified social worker, Butts earned her master's of social work from the University at Buffalo and her bachelor's of science in psychology from Howard University.
The search for this position will begin shortly.
