Commencement 2001
Many thanks to all the members of our academic community who supported Commencement 2001. I congratulate the commencement committee on a wonderfully successful weekend of activities and on three ceremonies that were meaningful and memorable for our graduates and their families. Commencement is our most important academic ceremony, and I am pleased to see the level of support and enthusiasm grow each year. I wish everyone an enjoyable summer, and, for those who will be taking time away from us, I look forward to seeing you return, renewed and refreshed, in the fall!

Faculty and Staff Open House
Many thanks to everyone who participated in Face to Face, the fifth annual Faculty and Staff Open House. Susan Earshen, director of human resource development, and her staff did a marvelous job on the planning of a community-building event that was fun and informative. The level of creativity was very high, as was our record-breaking attendance of 525 people. I extend special congratulations to the departments that were voted by their colleagues as having the best exhibits: most informative, Weigel Health Center; most innovative, E. H. Butler Library; most enthusiastic/friendly staff: EOP. This event has quickly become a Buffalo State tradition, and I'm sure we all look forward to its continuation.

Project Success Faculty Training Program
Forty-five faculty and academic affairs staff members participated in the two-day training program conducted by Project Success, "Ensuring Quality Higher Education for Students with Disabilities." Special appreciation is given to the following faculty members who participated in a panel discussion concerning their experiences in providing educational adjustments for students with disabilities: Donald Birdd, professor, earth sciences and science education; Abdollah Hajikandi, assistant director for academic services, EOP; Wendy Paterson, assistant professor, elementary education and reading; and Craig Werner, associate professor, English.

Special recognition also is given to Dennis Mike, associate professor, exceptional education, for his presentation on making Blackboard accessible to students with disabilities. Finally, a special appreciation to J. T. Duffy, Angela Acuisto, and Desirae Lawton for sharing their experiences as college students with disabilities and for providing valuable insight into how faculty assisted them in obtaining a higher education.

Over the past year, Project Success has provided training to more than 530 administrators at Buffalo State and our 13 training partners (colleges and universities throughout Western New York). Additionally, more than 100 faculty and staff members at Buffalo State have received training on the needs of college students with disabilities. The results of these efforts have helped the nearly 700 students with disabilities at Buffalo State receive a quality higher education. Additional training opportunities will be offered during the 2001–2002 academic year for faculty and staff at Buffalo State, as well as at our participating training partner schools.

Project co-director Marianne Savino and I also wish to recognize the faculty, administrators, and students who have served on the Project Success advisory committee for the past two years. Their support and guidance has been very instrumental in the continued accomplishments of Project Success, which is funded by a grant from the U. S. Department of Education.
