From the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

2001 President's Medal for Outstanding Graduate Student
Vickie L. Rubin will receive the President's Medal for Outstanding Graduate Student at the Master's Hooding and C.A.S. commencement ceremony Saturday, May 12. Rubin graduates with a master of science in exceptional education and is the recipient of this year's Bernard Yormak Award for Outstanding Graduate Student in the Exceptional Education Department. Rubin is currently the parent education coordinator at the Early Childhood Direction Center, part of Kaleida Health, and the inclusion facilitator at Camp Centerland in Elma, New York. While earning her degree, Rubin continued her long-standing involvement in helping others through organizations such as Yad B'Yad (Hand in Hand) and Chromosome Deletion Outreach, and by publishing articles in local newsletters.

Finalists for the award were Mary Bates, Mary Ann Hobar, Amie Jakubowski, and Vincentia Paul.

Position Announcement: Assistant for Degrees
Job Description
The Registrar's Office will be implementing the Degree Navigator audit system, which will replace the Degree Audit now in use. The position of assistant for degrees has been created to support the implementation project. This is a temporary, one-year position. The successful candidate will transfer back to his or her former position upon completion of the temporary assignment.

Essential Functions
The assistant for degrees will be responsible for certifying completion of final degree requirements for baccalaureate degrees. This includes:

  • Overseeing the creation and maintenance of degree screens for potential graduates
  • Verifying completion of major and minor programs
  • Corresponding with students regarding their degree status
  • A commitment beyond normal business hours
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or significant credit toward a bachelor's degree
  • Five years' experience working with college student records
  • Understanding of college academic policies
  • Working knowledge of the Degree Audit
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team
  • Experience in successful interactions with staff, students, faculty, and administrators
  • Excellence in high-volume work requiring attention to detail with tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and meet goals as a self-starter

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the Buffalo State student records system, STARS
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving abilities
  • Record of initiatives to improve service
  • Experience with Web site maintenance or willingness to learn

Applicants should send a cover letter relating qualifications to position requirements; a résumé; and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three references. Transcripts will be required but need not be submitted in advance. Review of applications will begin May 4 and continue until a successful candidate is named. Anticipated date of hire is May 21.

From the Vice President for Finance and Management

Bookstore Ribbon-Cutting
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open the new Barnes & Noble at Buffalo State Bookstore at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 4 in front of the store on the lower main level of the Campbell Student Union. All are invited. A campus grand-opening celebration is planned for Thursday, September 13. Details of this event will be available early in the fall semester.

Empire Plan Coverage Outside of New York State
A booklet containing important information about Empire Plan coverage outside the state is now available from the Human Resource Management Office. "On the Road with the Empire Plan" may be useful when traveling or sending a child off to college. Call ext. 4821 for a copy.

From the Vice President for Student Affairs

Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs Appointed
Thomas Koller has been appointed to the new position of associate director of athletics for external affairs, effective April 19.

His primary responsibilities include ticket sales, advertising and promotions, corporate-sponsor sales, fund-raising activities, and all athletics-related special events. He supervises the Sports Information Office, serves as department liaison to the Bengal Booster Club and the Alumni Affairs Office, and oversees summer programs and sports camps.

A Buffalo State graduate, Koller joins the college staff after 13 years with the University at Buffalo, where he was sports information director for six years, assistant athletics director for marketing and media relations for two years, and assistant athletics director for corporate marketing and special events for the past five years.

Who's Who and Mildred Campbell Leadership Awards
A ceremony and reception were held April 18 at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center to honor the recipients of the 2001 Who's Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities and the Mildred Keller Campbell Leadership Awards.

Who's Who is a national award whose recipients are chosen based on academic success, campus leadership, and community involvement. This year's recipients are:

Juniors Kwabena Boakye, Melessa Britt Hamilton, Yanhui Luo, Kathryn Mitchell, and Antoinette S. Williams; seniors Brian J. Berger, Kathryn Bersch, Michael P. Dollard, Alexter Griffith, Jill Peca, Susan L. Smith; and graduate students Vincentia G. Paul and Amy Sanders.

The Mildred Keller Campbell Leadership Award went to Kwabena Boakye, a junior biology major and chemistry minor with a 3.82 overall GPA. On the Dean's List in fall 1999 and spring 2000, Boakye received both the Ross Kenzie Scholarship and the Anna Burrell Scholarship. He has been a member of the honors program since September 1999 and president of the Biology Club since October 2000. He also was accepted to the McNair Scholars Program.

"Diversity Works" Survey
The April-May edition of "Diversity Works" was distributed April 13. Large-print and electronic versions are available; call ext. 6210. Students with Disabilities and CEP
Faculty members are encouraged to remind students with disabilities who need special accommodations for testing during CEP to make arrangements with the Special Services Office well in advance, so that appropriate arrangements can be made. Call Marianne Savino at ext. 4500 with questions about accommodations for students.



Project Success Faculty Training Program
Project Success will hold a two-day training program on Monday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 22 to help faculty provide a quality education for students with disabilities. A stipend will be provided for participation. Limited seats are available for those who will teach freshman seminars and courses in the general education core during fall 2001. For more information, call Peggy Bristol, Project Success coordinator, ext. 3515; Marianne Savino, coordinator of special services, ext. 4500; or Dolores Battle, senior adviser to the president for equity and campus diversity, ext. 6210.

Curricular Proposals
Deadlines for 2000/01 course and program curricular proposals have passed, and submissions are not processed during the summer. To prevent the loss of files, faculty curriculum committees should not submit proposals to the College Senate Curriculum Committee until the fall 2001 semester commences.

Senate Election
Senate elections continue through noon Friday, April 27. Elections are currently being held for two at-large senate seats and one SUNY senate seat. The election process can be accessed through the College Senate Web site at www.buffalostate.edu/orgs/senate.
